AHJ Approval Process for QEWs

All Berkeley Lab personnel and subcontractors who perform electrical work are required to be approved by the Electrical Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for Safe Work Practices as Qualified Electrical Workers (QEWs).

Provisional Qualified Electrical Worker (PQEW)

  • The approval process requires submittal of documented credentials attesting that the applicant has sufficient work experience to substantiate adequate skills and knowledge related to the type of equipment to be worked upon.
Frequency:

Once

QEW training may be started prior to AHJ approval as QEW.

QEW Safety Training Requirements

  • Approved applicants are then directed to complete the required safety training for their assigned QEW classification.  This is NOT skills training.
  • QEW training may be started prior to AHJ approval as QEW.
Frequency:

Every three (3) years

Training

Practical Demonstration

  • Approved applicants are required to complete a certification and demonstrate skills.
Frequency:

Annually

Completion of all of the above results in QEW status.  QEWs are provided a badge to identify their QEW level and restrictions
